Other potential promotion

Another way to promote our music video would be through merchandise. Many artists now create merchandise due to illegal downloading on the internet, therefore they cannot make money. Merchandise opens up an opportunity for them to promote themselves as well as making money. Here are some examples of merchandise from artists.

Katy Perry

Bruno Mars

Bruno Mars has brought out T-Shirts with tour dates on the back. As well as promoting himself through the T-Shirt he is also promoting his tours as it gives the dates and the places he is touring.

Rihanna

Rihanna has also experimented with promoting herself. She has got involved with companies such as MAC make up and the retail store River Island.

Both these companies are very well known and are very likely to promote the artist as they already shop in the store. Rihanna ha her own collection in River Island and by customers buying it, she therefore makes money from it and also promotes herself and her work.

We believe that all of these ideas have been very effective with promotion, therefore we tested out with our own pictures to create our own merchandise.

Final Magazine Advert

Final Magazine Advert

This is our final design for the magazine advert for our music video. We have used the same picture as the front cover of our Digipak as it makes it recognisable for the audience and they know that both of the products are promoting the music video. By using two different types of promotions, this could mean that we target a larger audience; therefore more people would watch our music video.
We have placed the picture on a grey background with black and white features sticking to the black and white theme. We have done this as it makes the bright red colour stand out attracting the audience, which may lead to them watching the video. We have included icons at the bottom such as MTV, RCA Records, AJ Music and ITunes. MTV is a widely known music company that advertise music on their own programme.

By using the MTV icon, this allows the audience to see that our music video has a relation to MTV and they would therefore be more likely to watching our video. RCA Records is the record company for Neon Jungle. We have included their logo as when we asked for permission from the record company, they asked us to show their record label within our work to advertise them. AJ Music is own record company logo, so advertising it in the magazine avert would allow people to recognise our company and also it would promote it with other work. Finally we have also included ITunes due to the proliferation of online music downloads. ITunes is a much more common method to buy music instead of physically buying music in a store. Music has now changed from physical to digital; therefore the main audience would use ITunes. This gives our video a larger opportunity to get noticed, further promoting it.

We have also included a 5 star rating from Q Magazine as well. Q Magazine is a new, up and coming magazine that specialises in music and artists, so that audiences will know it is a well trusted and appealing magazine and by giving our video 5 stars, this will promote our music video.

Ancillary task: Magazine Advert

What is a magazine advert?

A magazine advert is usually used for promotional purposes. In our case it would be to promote and sell our music video to our target audience. Music companies do this to increase sales of their product to make money. Magazine adverts create awareness of the product they are promoting so that their audience will know that their product is available to buy. Companies would have to choose carefully which magazine to promote with, as it is vital with targetting the right audience to buy their product. A magazine advert is a branding technique along with a digipak and these techniques are used by companies to promote the band or artist. Usually they use the same fonts and colour schemes to make their product have a unique selling point within the market.

As part of the Ancillary Tasks we have to create a magazine cover therefore i decided to analyse a Billboard magazine which focuses on a similar target audience to the target audience for our music video as well as the same genre. This has given me more of an idea of what we should include when we create our Magazine cover.

What magazine would we use to advertise our advert.

Blue Smoke Grenade

We have decdied to use a smoke grenade in our music video as we had been influence by other videos such as Rihanna- We Found Love and Miley Cyrus- We Can't Stop. We believe it will give our music video an extra aspect to make it more interesting for our audience. We have decided to buy a blue colour as it contrasts against the green setting making it stand out.

We bought the smoke grenade from a company called 'Enola Gaye'. They have a wide variety of colours, however we believed that blue would stand out the most. When we recieved it through the post, we checked the rules on the side and it stated that it was an offence to use it in a public place. We had to respect this, therefore we used it in a private and enclosed area.

Here is the original footage when we filmed the smoke grenade. We shot it on a camera phone as we did not feel comfortable filming on the other camera as it was very muddy on the day we filmed and we did not want to slip and drop the camera.

We believe that by using a smoke grenade in our music video is a very effective way to draw in audiences as it is unique and by using editing techniques can make it look very effective in the music video.

Weather

To make sure that we are aware of all the possible stepbacks that could prevent us from filming on a scheduled filming day we are checking any thing that we could think could go wrong and stop us from filming. One of the main concerns we have is the weather, we are hoping that the weather for our filming isnt going to be too cold because of the minimal clothing that our actors are going to wear. The costumes we have chose for our actors show off a lot of skin which conveys voyeurism which is a convention of our genre of music video. We also may have to film over a few days therefore meaning if we have to use the same location and costume on seperate days the weather has to be the same otherwise the editing will not flow and it will look bad that the weather is different.

Map of Location

This is a map of where we filmed on 22nd November, the red lines convey the walk from the closer station which was only a couple of minutes away so we were well planned for knowing where we were going. The red circles are highlighting the different places we filmed on this particular day, as you can see we used a variety of loactions in this part of london which was good however some parts did not go as well as planned for filming therefore we may need to cut some parts out at the editing stages.

The Importance of Lighting

Here is a prezi that I created on lighting and how it is important. I have added three pictures to present what one of our locations looks like on different times and different days.

White backdrop

We decided to have a white background in our music video as it creates a performance side to the video and can show the artist. Many music videos include these shots to focus completely on the artist. My cousin is a photographer and she has a white backdrop we could use, so I asked for her permission to use it for our music video.

Costumes (initial ideas)

Costumes for Music Video

Costumes for Music Video by jessandamy featuring a red full skirt

These are the first outfits that will be featured in our Music Video, we chose these outfits because the colour scheme all fits together and makes the characters look like a girl group. These outfits also fit with the genre of our music video and look like something that the artist would wear. We only have three characters in our music video however i thought it was a better idea to create costume ideas with four characters to prepare ourselves in case one of the costumes has a malfunction or incase it doesnt fit one of the characters.

Two outfits for music video

Two outfits for music video by jessandamy featuring a print dress

These are two more costumes that we are hoping for out actors to wear in our Music Video. These two particular outfits are planned to be wore for one of our locations in London. We chose these certain outfits because they are both particularly dark costumes which contrasts to the graffiti background and the brightness of being in London. Therefore meaning these outfits will stand out and look better for the viewer of the music video.

Costumes for music video

Costumes for music video by jessandamy featuring stretchy pants

These two outfits compliment each other perfectly, both these ourfits look sexy which conveys voeyrism to our music video which is great because that fits with the codes and conventions of our genre. These costumes look very good alongside each other especially when they are used in the location that we are planning to use them for they will stand out immensly.

Script for Actors

We decided to create a script of the lyrics and chose which of our actors will be lip syncing what lines. This enables us to make sure that the actors are all organised for filming which prevents us to have to refilm anything as we could run out of time that way. We have emailed all our actors a copy of this script so they are aware of what they are doing. Also on this script we have given ourselves an idea of the types of shots we want to use for each line with the possible location, this has helped us to be more clear and well planned for what we are going to be filming and when.

Storyboard

Here is an online storyboard I created for a general idea for our music video. We want to include both performance and the artist singing along and lip synching. We plan to have our opening shot with a graffiti wall. This will immediately show the audience the genre and style of the music video and show that it has rebellious influences. We will edit the shot and have the title as credits ontop of the image. 'TROUBLE' will also show the audience what the video is about and what it will include.
We want to add loads of different locations as the song is fast tempo and all the locations will keep the audience engaged and they will not get bored. We believe this would work effectively as a lot of modern music videosalso do this and we have taken this as an inspiration.

AJ Music Logo

Here are my 2 designs for the logos I created. I have also shown screenshots of the progress I made with my second logo design. I done this as I could link this back to my first design and explain why I made these decisionsa with my new logo and why they are more effective.

Prelim- practising lip synching

As we have chosen a song for our music video and RCA Records (the record company for the song) have allowed us to use it, we then started practising the lyrics to the song to see how easy or hard they would be to keep up with due to it being a fast paced song. Jess is in tyhis video and managed to keep up with the song very well therefore we decided to stay with this song and use it to make our music video.

We havedecided to do our music video to the song 'Trouble' by Neon Jungle. Here is their official music video.

As the actual music video has got the girls talking in the official music video. I have found just the audio version for the song.

Survey Monkey

Here I have creates an online survey to discover what people expect to see in music videos and other various questions about music videos. I have done this as it could help discover our target audience and if people think that music videos are important.

Questionnaire results

Here is our questionnaire results looking back at these results we now know what our target audience are interested in what makes a good music video. Codes and Conventions of a Music Video

I decided to create a prezi on the codes and conventions of a music video to make us become more aware of what creating a good music video involves and needs. From making this prezi and doing the research to know what to write i have learnt that all the good music videos focus on the artist and use a variety of camera shots and angles to make the music video unique. In our Music video we will make sure we are following these guidlines and ideas of what to use in our video to make sure it is the best that it could be.

Developed Ideas

Wordle: Media-initial ideas

Here i created a Wordle on all ideas that we had thought of from what shots to use to places where we are thinking of filming and the genre that we are thinking of making our Music Video to. Using wordle helped me to make sure i have thought about all the main things to include in our music video and what is important.

Initial Ideas

Here we have created a mind map on some of the initial idea we have come up with to include in our video. We have included possible song choices, locations, props, cinematography and locations. The importance of creating a mind map is to have a general idea and theme of what we will include within our music video. Our ideas will then become more developed and we will have a clear idea of what we will do with our music video and song choice.

Analysing a music video (The Saturdays- Gentlemen)

We decided to analyse this music video as we have chosen a song that is a girl group, so we looked at this video as the Saturdays are a girl group and we were able to watch and analyse to see what they do in thier video compared to what we are planning to put in our music video. This gave us some inspiration on costumes and types of Camera shots to use.

Britney Spears-Toxic analysis

I analysed Britney Spears-Toxic for the same reasons I did for Rihanna's video. Britney is 21 in this video and has always been seen as a young girl, through her appearances in Disney. She used this video to show the audience she has grown up by experimenting with adult life such as men, drugs and sex. This has created a new representation of her and her star image.

Rihanna- Umbrella analysis

As we have now decided to create a music video, I have analysed the music video for Umbrella by Rihanna. This was thew stepping stone into Rihannas career and is a large comparison to her previous work. Rihanna at this point was growing into a woman, therefore her video includes yoyeurism and she is representated as more sexualised. Her more modern work has come even further than this as she becomes more famous and building up her star image. I decided to analyse this video as it shows her first experimenting with her sexuality and her future representation and image.

Decision to do a music video

We have decided to do a music video for our A2 coursework as it is something we think would be the most interesting to do and we would get more enjoyment out of it. We also believe that there are more conventions and inspirations we could use in order to create our music video and include these within our evaluations. By being able to appreciate music videos more than short films, we would put more effort into creating a music therefore our work will look more professional.

Short film definition

Although we are not creating a short film as our project, weave given a definition of what it is and explained why they are used. We decided against this project as we thought that creating a music video would appeal much more to us and we could include influences and inspirations from our own knowledge as we now more about music videos.

Analysis of our AS Media Blog

We decided to analyse our old blog so we could look back and see what we believe we did well, and what we thought we didn't do as well with. With this information, we can develop our skills to work better and harder on our current blog and project.
